INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RELIGION JOURNALISTS

The International Association of Religion Journalists (IARJ) is a global network of journalists promoting excellence in the coverage of religion and spirituality. It provides services and resources to strengthen and support the work of its members. It engages media leaders, educational institutions and communities on the importance of accurate, balanced, and ethical religion coverage to foster understanding.

Goals and objectives of the IARJ are:

  • To encourage religion reporting and expand the global network of journalists who report on religion.

  • To foster cross-border reporting and the establishment of local and regional cooperation.

  • To enhance the skills involved in covering religion news stories through the development of religion data resources, industry training, ethical guidelines, meetings and dialogues and through partnerships with related organizations.

  • To promote excellence, education and innovation through scholarships, fellowships, grants and prizes.

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS AND RESULTS

Since its founding in 2012, the IARJ has specialized in building peer-to-peer relationships among journalists around the world and now has 700 members on all of the inhabited continents. The IARJ’s leadership is a Who’s Who of top award-winning religion writers, many of whom have volunteered to help the IARJ sponsor major conferences in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia. Through a close partnership with the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), the IARJ’s website co-publishes ARDA’s Global Plus columns exploring complex issues in world religion, and the IARJ also offers links to ARDA’s databases for journalists doing research. The IARJ also serves as a clearinghouse for occasional global requests for connection with our member journalists.
